Dr. Bruce Rittmann and Dr. Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown are contributing authors to an article just published in Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation, "Method for Assessing Source Zone Natural Depletion at Chlorinated Aliphatic Spill Sites." The article was a collaborative effort with Dr. Paul Johnson and Dr. Ryan Ekre.
The Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology announced that Annika Faucon, Denton Holzer and Sanya Mehta have been awarded the 2014-2015 Swette Undergraduate Sustainability Internships. The internships allow junior and seniors in science and engineering to participate in established research projects. These projects encourage sustainable solutions to societal issues through scientific advancements. Annika will be working with the photobioenergy team to explore microbial communities in photobioreactors. Denton's research will focus on understanding hydrolysis mechanisms, which plays a critical role in wastewater applications. Sanya will be researching bioremediation using membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs). Congratulations to the new interns!
Congratulations to several undergraduate researchers who have been awarded Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) scholarships for Fall 2014. Brendan Cahill's research focuses on understanding the roles of heterotrophic bacteria in photobioreactor microbial communities. Mikaela Stadie's research is providing insight into how different catalysts affect peroxide production at the cathode chamber in fuel cells. Allison Snodgrass is exploring the role of biofilms in biofuel production. Alan Proctor is researching bioremediation of hydrocarbons. Emily Bondank's research focuses on bioremediation using dechlorinating bacteria. The FURI program encourages undergraduate students to expand their engineering experience through hands on experience through research.
The Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) Symposium is a highlight every semester in the Rittmann Lab and the Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology. Our engineering undergraduate researchers present their work to their peers, faculty, friends and family. Here are a few photo's from the event held on April 11, 2014.
Several undergraduate researchers in the Swette Center will be presenting results from their research at the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) symposiumtoday (April 11) from 1-3 PM located at the Engineering Center G-Wing patio. The FURI program encourages undergraduate students to expand their engineering experience through hands on experience through research. SCEB will be represented by several students including Mackenzie Hagan, Emily Bondank, Scott Shearman, Allison Snodgrass, and Brendan Cahill.
Dr. Shilpi Kushwaha, a Fulbright Visiting Scholar to SCEB from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, will be attending "Strengthening Communities through Diversity and Action" seminar in Louisville, Kentucky later this month. Seminar topics are focues on diversity, philanthropy, and service.
